As book publishers, we are exceptionally aware of the impact our small business has on the environment. We’re consumers of trees, fossil fuels, minerals and chemicals, most of which have detrimental effects to the finite resources of this planet and the environment we love to explore. We are continually trying to find ways to overcome those issues. Already we’ve eliminated single-use plastic from our shipping processes, and we’ve committed to only using Forest Stewardship Council approved paper in all of our books. But there’s still more we can do.
For every book we sell we’ll plant one tree in partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects. The average book has a carbon footprint of around 5 pounds. The average tree offsets around 50 pounds of carbon emissions each year. For some perspective, that’s, on average, about 10 times the amount of CO2 emitted in the production of one copy of one of our books offset every year the tree lives (hopefully hundreds of years). So far, people like you have helped us plant over 12,000 trees!
But it’s more than that. We don’t just want our books to grow trees, but plant biodiverse, native forests. We love travel to the world’s wild places, but those places need our help, and more than just the shallow net-zero promises CEOs make about futures they’ll not be a part of. We want to build eco-systems that support thriving wildlife and do more than our fair share of fixing climate change. Maybe this isn’t the only solution, but it’s our start.
Importantly, didn’t increase the price of any of our books to make this happen, nor have we passed the costs onto our retailers, bookshops, authors or production partners. We, at Exploring Eden Media, have taken on the entirety of that burden and privilege to contribute more than our fair share to the plight of the environment in the face of climate change.
So, whenever you pick up one of our books, be that from a bookstore, one of our retail partners or here on our website, know that you’ve contributed to a solution, and you’ve helped plant and sustain native, biodiverse forests around the world.
If you want to do more and help reforest parts of the world, we recommend Eden Reforestation Projects, who run projects all over the planet. Find out more.
